  1. Freire Scholarship Fund: A Teacher Information Guide

Program Specialist: Stanley P. Jones 703-503-6463

“The future isn’t something hidden in a corner. The future is something
we build in the present.” – Paulo Freire

The Freire Scholarship Fund was established in 1998—thanks to a generous donation. The Fund is named in honor of Paulo Freire, an internationally revered Brazilian adult educator who passed away in 1997. He developed an approach in which both teachers and students become active participants in the learning process. Freire saw education as a pathway out of poverty and as an opportunity for adults to gain voice in their communities.

The Freire Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Adult High School Completion (AHSCP) students who are economically and educationally disadvantaged. These funds can be used for any expense that enables a student to achieve an educational goal (for example, taking a class associated with any of the three AHSCP programs, buying a textbook, or taking the GED test).

To be eligible for the Fund, students first complete an application indicating level of need. Recipients must fall under the income guidelines established by the federal government’s Lower Living Standard Income Level. Reviewers consider size of family and outstanding financial obligations (such as legal and medical bills). Moreover, the number of applications that can be approved depends on the amount of funding available.
